Mohammed Umar, the council chairman of Sardauna Local Government Council in Taraba State, has taken decisive action by imposing a curfew in Gembu, the administrative headquaters of the council.
The curfew, set to run from 8pm to 5am starting Monday, comes in the wake of heightened tensions following the arrest and alleged murder of a suspect, Haliru Waziri, by the Civil Defence in the area.
Recall that Insight Northeast reports that Waziri met a tragic end, purportedly beaten to death by the Civil Defence personnel post his apprehension, sparking outrage and unrest within the community.
In a statement released to the press on Monday through his Special Adviser on Media, Marvellous Heli, the council chairman emphasized that the curfew aims to restore calm and tranquility in the council amidst the escalating tensions triggered by the suspect’s demise.
Notably, the timing of the curfew was strategically planned to accommodate the fasting schedule of Muslim adherents observing Ramadan, demonstrating sensitivity to religious practices during this period.
Assuring the populace of his administration’s unwavering commitment to preserving lives and property regardless of tribal, religious, or political affiliations, the council chairman sought to reassure residents of their safety and security under his governance.
The Civil Defence’s assertion that the deceased suspect was involved in criminal activities further complicates the situation, intensifyingthe challenges faced by the community.
To prevent further disturbances, reports indicate a heightened presence of heavily armed security personnel deployed to Gembu to maintain law and order and avert any potential escalation of violence.
