The Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is set to host its first-ever international conference, bringing together stakeholders to address the complex and protracted humanitarian crisis plaguing the Lake Chad region.
The two-day conference, titled “Insecurity, Reconstruction, Resettlement, and Rehabilitation in the Lake Chad Basin Region,” will commence on May 27 at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Hall.
The event aims to provide a platform for experts to discuss solutions to the multifaceted crisis affecting the region.
Years of conflict with Boko Haram and ISWAP have resulted in massive population displacement, poverty, and environmental degradation due to climate change, leaving the region struggling and in dire need of urgent intervention and revitalization efforts.
The conference will feature lead paper presenters, including Rtd. Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff; Prof. Kyari Mohammed, Vice Chancellor of Nigerian Army University; and Prof. Samuel O. Aghalino, President of the Historical Society of Nigeria.
The event will also include an Award Dinner and Night on May 28, where key stakeholders who have made significant contributions to the region will be honored.
Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, Vice Chancellor of UNIMAID, will serve as the chief host and guest speaker, alongside Prof. Daud Abdallah, Director, Middle East Monitor (MEMO), UK.
The conference is expected to attract experts from various fields, including academia, government, and humanitarian organizations.
The Lake Chad crisis has had far-reaching consequences, affecting millions of people in the region. The conference provides a crucial platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss sustainable solutions to address the complex issues affecting the region.
