A disturbing incident occurred in Misau, Bauchi State, where an irate mob overpowered police officers and killed two suspects arrested in connection with a murder case. The suspects were accused of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
On August 18, 2024, the police received a tip about a body lying in a pool of blood in Anguwan Agwaluma, Misau town. The victim, 25-year-old Muhammad Jibir, a commercial motorcycle operator, was found with his throat slit and cut with a knife. His motorcycle was stolen.
Two suspects were arrested on August 19, 2024, with the stolen motorcycle, but a mob intercepted them, overpowered the police, and killed the suspects. One of the bodies was burnt to ashes.
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Mohammed, condemned the mob’s actions, stating, “This was barbaric and inimical to the laws governing our dear country.”
He warned that the command will not tolerate individuals taking the law into their hands and emphasized the importance of allowing the police to investigate and prosecute suspects.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that suspects should be allowed to be investigated and prosecuted by the appropriate authorities.
