ASUU Taraba State University Chapter Suspends One-Month Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) Chapter, on Friday, suspended its one-month strike following agreements reached with the Taraba State Government.

The union embarked on the industrial action on Dec. 5, 2024, citing the partial implementation of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs) signed with the state government since 2014.

In a statement issued in Jalingo, ASUU-TSU said the key demands prompting the strike included university funding, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pensions and gratuities, unpaid salaries, the constitution of a governing council, and adjustments to minimum wage.

The union stated that the government had made notable commitments, including the disbursement of 10 per cent of accumulated EAA and a plan to pay 5 per cent monthly beginning February 2025 until all arrears are cleared.

It added that the government had approved the implementation of a State-Defined Pension Scheme to ensure prompt and efficient payment of entitlements.

The statement further disclosed that a template for clearing the backlog of salaries would be finalized by the first week of February, while the university’s governing council would be reconstituted to meet statutory requirements.

“With the above agreements in place and the approval of ASUU National, the ASUU-TSU Chapter hereby suspends the strike action with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The union expressed gratitude to its national and zonal leadership and members of the TSU Congress for their support throughout the negotiation process.
