Gov. Buni Commissions Water Plant, Flags Off Flood Control Project

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, on Monday commissioned the Buni Gari Water Treatment Plant and flagged off the construction of the Buni Yadi/Damaturu Flood and Erosion Control Project.

The newly commissioned Buni Gari Dam has a capacity of 243 million liters, with a water treatment plant capable of processing 300,000 liters daily. The facility also includes an intake structure, a pumping system, and both generator and solar power systems.

Speaking at the event, Buni emphasized that the project was initiated to address the long-standing water scarcity in Buni Gari, Buni Yadi, and surrounding communities.

“I am pleased our government has fulfilled its campaign promise to construct the Buni Gari Dam and water treatment plant to bring succour to the communities,” he said.

The governor urged residents to take ownership of the project and protect it for sustainable use.

During the flag-off ceremony for the Buni Yadi/Damaturu Flood and Erosion Control Project, Gov. Buni stated that the project would mitigate the impact of floods and erosion, protect the environment, and support agriculture.

“The project will curb the menace of floods and erosion, halt environmental destruction, and optimize water harvested from floods to boost irrigation for food security and economic prosperity,” he said.

Buni also disbursed compensation to individuals whose lands were acquired for the project and commended the resilience of the affected communities for their dedication to agricultural practices despite the challenges caused by floods.

As part of the event, the governor distributed farm inputs to irrigation farmers, including 500 bags of NPK fertilizer, 85 cartons of liquid fertilizer, 115 solar-powered irrigation pumps, 1,000 knapsack sprayers, improved seeds of 15 crop varieties, herbicides, and pesticides.

“This further demonstrates our administration’s commitment to making agriculture attractive, productive, and profitable for our farmers,” Buni added.

In a related development, the governor commissioned a Water Quality Laboratory at the Ministry of Water Resources in Damaturu.

“This laboratory ensures the quality of water supplied to our people is safe for consumption. It also provides a safeguard against waterborne diseases, ensuring compliance with global water and sanitation standards,” he said.

Gov. Buni reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing safe drinking water across the state to improve citizens’ health and well-being.
