The Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anaele as the acting Director, Department of Army Public Relations, making her the first female officer to hold the position in the history of the service.
Lt. Col. Anaele is expected to formally assume office on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, taking over from the outgoing spokesperson, Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu.
This historic appointment marks a significant milestone in the Nigerian Army’s commitment to gender inclusion and leadership diversity within its ranks.
Checks by Daily Trust revealed that since the establishment of the Nigerian Army over five decades ago, no female officer has ever led the Public Relations Department until now.
Anaele’s appointment is seen as a bold step toward expanding opportunities for female officers in the military, particularly in leadership and strategic communication roles.
Further details about her background and plans for the department are expected to be released in the coming days.
