COAS Urges Innovation to Tackle Security Threats in Bauchi

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has urged officers of the Nigerian Army to demonstrate purposeful leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment in confronting contemporary security challenges.

He made the call during the 2025 Combat Arms Training (CAT) Week held in Bauchi on Monday.

Co-hosted by the Infantry and Armoured Corps, the training event focused on improving operational synergy across formations. The theme for this year’s event is “Strengthening Combat Arms Cooperation in a Joint Environment: A Pre-requisite for Success in Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations.”

Speaking to participants, Gen. Oluyede described the theme as timely, noting the increasing complexity of today’s operational environments.

He said: “The success of our operations hinges on how effectively the Combat Arms work together. We must go beyond doctrine and innovate practical, efficient solutions to improve mission outcomes.”

He further urged officers to adopt resourceful approaches to operations and maximize available assets in combating emerging threats. The COAS also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strategic direction and unwavering support to the Nigerian Army.

He equally thanked the Government and people of Bauchi State for their continued hospitality and support to the military.

In a keynote address, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed—represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau—commended the Nigerian Army’s role in ensuring peace and stability in the state.

He noted that Bauchi remains one of the most peaceful states in the country due to the Army’s efforts and pledged sustained cooperation with security agencies.

Commander of the Armoured Corps, Major General Obinna Ajunwa, in his welcome address, said the CAT Week was designed to assess ongoing operations and provide a forum for critical reflection and solution-finding. He emphasized that participants would also review policies and operational procedures for greater effectiveness.

As part of the event, General Oluyede performed the groundbreaking for the construction of the 211 Demonstration Battalion Barracks.

He also commissioned the Nigerian Army/NORINCO Comprehensive Service Centre, aimed at expediting the repair and maintenance of combat platforms.
