Borno Government Celebrates Eid el-Kabir with 200 Rescued Street Children

The Borno State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, on Sunday celebrated Eid el-Kabir with 200 rescued street and vulnerable children at the Bulunkutu Rehabilitation Centre in Maiduguri.

The children, drawn from the streets and other vulnerable circumstances, were treated to a festive celebration filled with music, traditional dances, games, and a shared meal, creating an atmosphere of joy, unity, and renewed hope.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare and reintegration of vulnerable children across the state.

“These children are not forgotten—they deserve a chance at a better life,” Gambo said. “Today is about mercy, reflection, and new beginnings. Under the compassionate and visionary leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, we remain committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and reintegrating every vulnerable child in Borno State.”

The 200 beneficiaries included unaccompanied and separated children, persons living with disabilities, and survivors of gender-based violence. Many of them shared personal testimonies of how their lives have improved since entering the state’s rehabilitation programme.

The Bulunkutu Rehabilitation Centre, which served as the venue, has become a safe space for vulnerable children to receive psychosocial support, education, and life skills, enabling their reintegration into society as productive citizens.

“This celebration goes beyond the festive mood,” Gambo added. “It is a reflection of the government’s sustained efforts to support and protect the most at-risk members of our society.”

Under the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum, Borno State has intensified efforts to reduce child vulnerability and promote inclusive development, particularly through social protection initiatives.
