Six months after suspending its indefinite strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sa’adu Zungur University branch, has accused the institution’s management of breaching key terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that led to the strike suspension.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its congress, signed by the branch chairman, Comrade Auwal Nuhu, and assistant secretary, Comrade Yahaya Yakubu, ASUU expressed deep disappointment over what it described as the university’s deliberate failure to honour its commitments.
“The congress observed, with concern, the calculated efforts by the university administration to undermine the progress of the MoU within the agreed timeline,” the statement read.
The union noted that despite the passage of half the agreed implementation period, “a significant portion of outstanding claims remain unpaid, even as the university has enjoyed increased funding in recent months.”
ASUU further alleged that the management has been evasive, shifting deadlines and withholding crucial information about computed arrears required for verification—tactics the union believes are aimed at frustrating the full execution of the agreement.
The communique also accused the university of intentionally withholding staff salaries to apply pressure and stall the process.
“Despite these provocations, we remain resolute in our demand for the full execution of the MoU,” ASUU said.
Efforts to obtain a response from the university spokesperson, Mr. Auwal Hassan, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The union’s latest stance raises concerns about a possible return to industrial action if the issues remain unresolved.
