The Nigerian Army has reacted to reports alleging the involvement of one of its personnel in the killing of a phone repairer, Alkasim Ibrahim, in Mayo Belwa, Adamawa State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on July 4, was first reported by Sahara Reporters, which alleged that Lance Corporal Ahmed Aminu was responsible for the act.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Lt. Adebayo Samuel Adewumi, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, HQ 23 Brigade, Yola, the Army expressed deep concern over the incident.
According to the statement, the soldier involved has been taken into custody while an investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It stated that the Nigerian Army remains committed to transparency, accountability and justice, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
“The Nigerian Army remains a professional and disciplined institution committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens.
“Acts of misconduct by any personnel, no matter how isolated, are neither condoned nor overlooked,” the statement said.
The Army urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading speculative reports that could disrupt public peace.
It also appealed for continued support and understanding from the public as it works to ensure justice and uphold its core values of integrity and service.
