Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has expressed his administration’s full support for the establishment of new Faculties of Medicine and Engineering at the Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi.
The governor made the pledge when he received the management team of the university on a courtesy visit at the Government House, Yola on Thursday.
Fintiri assured the team that the state government would provide the necessary resources to actualise the planned expansion.
The governor also disclosed plans for the installation of a five-megawatt solar electricity system at the institution, supported by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), to address the persistent power challenges faced by the university.
He urged the university management to adopt innovative approaches in addressing internal challenges, assuring them of sustained government backing for research, innovation, and staff welfare.
The governor also highlighted the ongoing collaborations with intervention agencies such as Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), saying that efforts were underway to resolve the university’s water supply challenges through joint interventions.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of ADSU, Prof. Augustine Clement, expressed gratitude to the governor for his continuous support and confidence in his leadership.
Prof. Clement said the university was committed to reforms that would enhance academic excellence, staff welfare and student development.
He disclosed that the institution, in collaboration with its governing council, was working to introduce professional courses in Medicine and Engineering.
The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the governor’s financial interventions, assuring that the funds would be judiciously utilised to improve infrastructure and academic standards.
However, he outlined some of the challenges facing the university, including high energy costs, water scarcity, lack of firefighting equipment—citing a recent fire incident—inadequate student accommodation, and poor road networks within the campus.
In their separate remarks, Dr. Godwin Boniface of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Mrs. Bifa of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), commended Governor Fintiri for appointing an internal candidate as Vice Chancellor.
They described the gesture as a testament to the governor’s commitment to ensuring stable leadership and a brighter future for the university.
