The impact of subsidy removal on the cost of living for citizens has been a topic of concern for governments and other stakeholders. The Federal Government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy has had far-reaching effects, with the cost of basic commodities skyrocketing and putting many households in a difficult financial situation.
To provide relief to the most vulnerable households, the Gombe state government has launched a palliative food distribution program that aims to provide food items to households in need.
In the second phase of the program which had impacted over 420,000 beneficiaries, the state government is targeting 90,000 beneficiaries, with food items such as rice, maize, and millet as well as agricultural inputs being distributed.
According to the state governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, a committee has been set up under the chairmanship of the Deputy Governor, with representation of various stakeholders to take charge of the distribution of the palliative. The Governor announced this, during a state-wide broadcast to mark the 2024 new year celebration in Gombe.
“The removal of fuel subsidy, though a painful yet necessary decision, has resulted in a rising cost of living and economic hardships among Nigerians. Over the past 6 months, we have introduced policies like wage grants to civil servants, food and agricultural support, and other palliative measures aimed at cushioning the side effects of the resulting economic shocks,” the Governor explained.
While commending residents for their resilience and understanding during the trying times, Governor Yahaya said, “As we brace for tougher challenges in 2024, and as we begin to invest the gains of fuel subsidy removal in areas that deliver long-term growth and inclusive development, I have no doubt that together we shall weather the storms and emerge stronger”.
“As we mark the beginning of a new year, let us carry forward the lessons learned in 2023. Let us embrace the coming year with a renewed hope, determination, and common sense of purpose,” the Governor stated while disclosing that his administration would be focusing more on building a Gombe State that leaves no one behind in 2024.
“We will continue to invest in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, job creation, peace and security. We shall continue to harness our human and natural resources in order to put Gombe State on the path of sustainable progress and all-inclusive development,” Governor Yahaya assures.
