Gombe Govt Moves To Restore Damaged Infrastructure, Enhance Public Safety

Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe has directed relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to conduct immediate assessment of infrastructure damaged by erosion and flooding in Gombe metropolis and environs.

Following the directive, the Commissioner of Works and Transport, through the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Danladi Adamu, on Tuesday led an inter-agency team to inspect nine affected locations.

Adamu said the visit was in line with the governor’s standing directive to promptly assess and respond to incidents of washouts in order to protect lives, property and public convenience.

He explained that recommendations would be made to government for urgent intervention in critical areas while long-term solutions would also be outlined.

Adamu urged residents to support government efforts by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse and building on waterways.

The team inspected sites at Orji Quarters near Yahuza Suya spot, Shehu Abubakar District by the High Court, Gadan Dahiru Deba in Pantami, Jekadafari near Gambo Isari residence, Madaki, Kundulum, Tumfure and other erosion-prone areas.

Representatives of Triacta Nigeria Ltd, led by Engr. Imran Khan, highlighted technical challenges caused by untraceable waterways and increased water volume due to rising urban development. He assured of collaboration with relevant agencies to restore water channels and implement effective control measures.

Some residents, including Mr. Sam Uso of Orji Quarters, whose home was affected by a collapsed bridge, commended the swift response of the state government.

Officials said while some areas would require immediate rehabilitation, others would be integrated into ongoing erosion control projects.

The assessment team comprised officials from the Ministries of Works, Housing and Transport, Water Resources, Forest and Environment, GOSUPDA and Triacta Nigeria Ltd.

The Inuwa Yahaya-led administration has undertaken several erosion control projects, including the 21km FCE(T)–Unguwa Uku Gully Erosion Project and the ongoing multi-billion naira mega gully erosion project spanning 18km from Abdullahi Ganduje Road to Doma area on the eastern outskirts of Gombe metropolis.
