Gombe To Host Maiden Health Summit, Commission Key Projects

The Gombe State Government has announced plans to host its first-ever Health Summit as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and deepen ongoing reforms in the sector.

The two-day event, scheduled for October 2–3, 2025, will convene key stakeholders, policymakers, and global health partners to deliberate on the state’s healthcare trajectory and define the next frontier for health system development.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Gombe on the state’s preparations for the summit.

He said the summit, themed “Transforming the Healthcare System in Gombe State: Accomplishments, Challenges, and the Next Frontier,” will provide a platform to review progress, identify gaps, and chart a sustainable course for health reforms.

Dr. Dahiru confirmed the attendance of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate; UN Deputy Secretary-General, Hajiya Amina Mohammed; lawmakers from the National Assembly Committees on Health, development partners, civil society organisations, and healthcare professionals.

Key discussions at the summit will focus on sub-themes such as sustainable health financing, donor transition strategies, sector-wide partnerships, and accelerating universal health coverage.

The event will also witness the launch of strategic documents including the Gombe State Human Resource for Health Policy and Strategy, and the unveiling of the “Flow of Confidence” initiative aimed at improving service delivery across health facilities.

Dr. Dahiru added that the state will introduce innovations such as the Ambulance Emergency Initiative to enhance rapid medical response in emergency situations.

As part of the summit’s highlights, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is expected to commission landmark projects executed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration.

These include the newly upgraded Federal Medical Centre (formerly General Hospital) Kumo, the College of Nursing Sciences, and the Children’s Hospital in Malam Inna.

According to the Commissioner, the health summit is expected to mark a significant milestone in Gombe’s development agenda, reinforcing its status as a model for health sector reform in Nigeria.
