Sen. Monguno Secure First Foreign MSc Scholarships to 11 Borno Graduates

Sen. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North and Chief Whip of the 10th Senate, has awarded fully funded international Master’s degree scholarships to 11 science graduates from across the senatorial district.

The initiative, the first of its kind facilitated by a legislator in the region, is aimed at strengthening human capital development in Northern Borno and supporting the post-insurgency recovery efforts of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration.

The beneficiaries, drawn from the ten Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Borno North, were selected based on merit, having graduated with Second Class Upper degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. They also passed a competitive aptitude test conducted by a special selection committee.

According to a statement from the senator’s office, the students will pursue two-year Master of Science (M.Sc.) programmes in India. The first year will focus on coursework, while the second will be dedicated to research and thesis writing.

The M.T. Monguno Foreign Scholarship Programme, estimated to be worth several hundred million naira, covers:

Visa processing and travel documentation

Full tuition fees for two academic sessions

Monthly upkeep allowances for 24 months

Provision of new laptops

Research and book grants

Sen. Monguno said the goal of the initiative is to provide qualitative education and nurture the next generation of scholars and professionals capable of contributing to the rebuilding and transformation of Northern Borno.

“This programme is not just about academic excellence; it’s about breaking barriers and opening up global opportunities for our youths. Education is a critical tool in our fight against poverty and insecurity,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the scholarship scheme is part of his legislative intervention and would be sustained annually to create a steady pipeline of skilled professionals in the region.

The M.T. Monguno Scholarship Scheme aligns with broader state-level efforts to improve access to education and equip young people with the tools to thrive in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.
