The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) says it is not part of any ongoing strike in the nation’s universities.
Dr Niyi Sunmonu, National President of CONUA, stated this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
Sunmonu said the union had not declared a strike, contrary to reports circulating on social media.
“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” he said.
He said the union remained committed to academic stability and was focused on engaging relevant stakeholders through peaceful dialogue.
Sunmonu explained that CONUA had no reason to embark on any industrial action, adding that concerns previously raised by the union had been addressed.
He said the union had earlier protested its exclusion from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement inaugurated in October 2024.
According to him, the protest prompted a meeting with the Minister of Education on Sept. 11, 2025, where the minister assured that the committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
He said the Federal Ministry of Education had since fulfilled the promise and that CONUA had no unresolved dispute with the government.
Sunmonu said the union held nationwide congresses between Sept. 18 and 24, during which members unanimously resolved not to embark on any strike.
He urged members to continue discharging their academic and administrative duties, and called on university authorities to ensure their safety.
Sunmonu also appealed to students to remain focused on their academic pursuits, assuring them of CONUA’s commitment to quality education and national development.
