
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Yobe State Command, has declared one inmate wanted following his escape during a road traffic accident involving a correctional vehicle on the Potiskum–Damaturu road.
In an official notice issued on Friday, the Command confirmed that the inmate escaped on April 13, 2026, while being transported from the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Potiskum, to Damaturu when the vehicle conveying inmates was involved in an accident.
According to the statement, the incident occurred as emergency efforts were underway to rescue victims of the crash, during which the inmate fled the scene.
The escaped inmate has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old convict with prison number J/1539/24. He was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024, and is facing charges under case number YBS/DT/HC/27/24.
The NCoS disclosed that the fugitive hails from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa Local Government Area and was last seen along the Potiskum–Damaturu highway.
The Command described him as dangerous and warned members of the public against any form of contact or assistance to him.
“The escaped individual is considered dangerous and members of the public are advised not to have any personal dealings with him,” the statement read.
The correctional service urged residents to report any sighting or useful information to the nearest police station, correctional facility, or designated emergency hotlines.

Authorities also warned that harbouring or assisting a fugitive is a criminal offence punishable under the law, while assuring that efforts are ongoing to recapture the inmate.
