The Borno State Police Command has averted what could have been a deadly explosion after recovering and safely demolishing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) buried near an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mallam Fatori.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
He said that on Aug. 18, at about 4:30 p.m., the Divisional Police Officer, Mallam Fatori, received intelligence on the suspected device.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) team from Base 13, Maiduguri, to the location.
“The team, in line with standard EOD safety protocols, cordoned off the area, carried out clearance operations and discovered the buried IED.
“It was evacuated to a safe location and professionally demolished without any casualty or damage to property,” he said.
Daso said members of the community were sensitised, while monitoring of the area was ongoing to ensure continued safety for residents and IDPs.
He said the Commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Borno, while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects or persons to the nearest police station.
He provided the command’s emergency contacts as 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
