A police inspector, whose identity has been withheld, has reportedly taken his own life in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The deceased officer was stationed at the Gwange Divisional of the Borno Police Command. According to sources within the community, the inspector appeared to be in good health when he was last seen three days prior to the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the officer’s decision to end his life remain unclear. Concerns arose on Saturday morning when residents of Layin Bayan, Wulari Jerusalem area of Maiduguri noticed a strange odor emanating from the inspector’s locked apartment.
Upon receiving the distress call, officers from the Metro and Gwange Divisions of the Borno Police Command were dispatched to the scene. Upon forcibly entering the apartment, they discovered the lifeless body of the inspector in his bedroom.
An anonymous source within the compound shared, “It was early this morning that people in the compound observed a strange odor emanating from his apartment; his door was shut from behind.
The men of police from Metro and Gwange Divisions respectively came to break the door and his lifeless body was found on the floor of his bedroom. They are currently in the compound.”
At the time of reporting, the police authorities had not released an official statement regarding the incident. Daily Trust attempted to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, ASP Kenneth Daso, for comment, but calls went unanswered.
The Borno State Police Command on Thursday said it arrested one suspect in connection with a hacked body buried in a shallow grave in the Jiddari-Polo area of Maiduguri, the state capital.
The command Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahun Daso, said in a statement on Thursday in Maiduguri, that the suspect was arrested on March 25.
He said the decomposed body was exhumed from the shallow grave on March 11, following a report by one Umar Muhammed, that he found a grave, digger and two knives in his uncompleted building.
”On receiving the report, detectives from GRA Police Station visited the scene and exhumed the body which was further taken to State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri for autopsy.
”Then on March 25, police investigation led to the arrest of one Ibrahim Muhammed who confessed to have conspired with his master, one Usman, still at large, and Mustapha Modu, a labourer who dug the shallow grave where the body was buried.
”He also confessed that he was paid the sum of N1, 500 to carry out the assignment,” Daso added.
The spokesman assured that effort was on to arrest other suspects.
Police in Bauchi State have arrested three suspects for alleged criminal conspiracy, threat to life, criminal intimidation and attempted kidnapping.
SP Ahmed Wakil, spokesperson for the command, said this in a statement on Sunday in Bauchi.
He said the command, in the fight against kidnapping and other heinous crimes, continued to yield positive results.
“On the 7th day of March 2024 at about 1400hrs, one Yahaya Adamu, of Badakoshi village Bauchi LGA, complained to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, AKU, domiciled in Criminal Investigation Department of the Command.
According to him, the complainant said on March 4, at about 2030 hrs, an anonymous individual called him on phone and introduced himself to him.
“He threatened him to produce the sum of N5 million.”
According to police, the caller threatened to mobilise his gang to kidnap either him (Yahaya) in particular, or his family members.
A few days later, the suspected kidnappers sent him their account details, using a Point of Sale, POS business account to deposit the requested amount, Wakil said.
“The suspected kidnappers emphasised that they knew all his assets and family members and to prove it, they started mentioning their names one after the other, further threatening that if the complainant resists to deposit the demanded amount, he would be at risk.”
According to him, on receipt of the intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa, directed the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, to discreetly investigate the circumstances surrounding the report.
“The investigation was conducted, using modern technology and resulted in the arrest of the suspects, Haro Adamu, 35; Aliyu Saidu, 40 and Musa Umaru, 35, of Birnin Kudu town in Jigawa.
“The suspects were differently arrested in Birnin Kudu town in Jigawa State and Kaltunga via Plateau State,” he said.
The spokesperson explained that an interrogation was conducted with the suspects who allegedly voluntarily confessed to the alleged criminal act.
He said they would be charged to court for prosecution.
Borno Police Command Announces CBT Exam For Police Constable Recruitment
The Borno State Police Command has issued an important announcement regarding the upcoming CBT examination for successful and qualified candidates who took part in the Physical/Credential Screening for the 2022 Police Constable Recruitment Exercise.
The examination, to be conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is scheduled for the 5th and 6th of March, 2024. All successful candidates have been notified of the examination dates through text messages.

The Borno State Police Command has apprehended Ahmed Mohammed, a 29-year-old resident of Polo High Court, in Maiduguri, for purportedly stealing a Toyota Highlander in Borno State with the intention of reselling it in Bauchi.
Spokesman of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakili in a statement issued on Tuesday said the arrest took place on February 24, 2024, following credible intelligence provided to the State Intelligence Department (SID).
The suspect was said to have been apprehended in the Bayan Gari Area of Bauchi with the stolen vehicle registered as ABC-65PK.
Wakili disclosed that Investigations revealed that the suspect was employed as a driver by a company owned by his secondary school classmate called Damuli Investment Company Ltd. in Maiduguri, Borno State.
He added that the suspect reportedly fled with the car to Bauchi with the intent to sell it out for N2,000,000 and use the money to pay his house rent and to welcome his estranged wife back home.
“The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered further investigation in Borno State to uncover additional motives behind the suspect’s actions,” Wakil stated.
The leader of the elite police unit in Borno State, has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). The announcement was met with widespread celebration among both law enforcement and the civilian population.
ACP Ibrahim Mohammed, known for his pivotal role in the fight against Boko Haram, was officially decorated by Governor Babagana Zulum on Wednesday at the Government House. The Governor expressed great satisfaction with ACP Mohammed’s advancement, highlighting his significant sacrifices and contribution to the counter-insurgency efforts against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Governor Zulum, on behalf of Borno State’s government, congratulated the new ACP on his well-deserved promotion, acknowledging his service since 2008. “His contributions to combating Boko Haram and other forms of criminality are monumental.
His accomplishments are a testament to the support of his team and former commissioners of police,” he said.
The Governor also acknowledged the commendable decision of the Commissioner of Police (CP), the Assistant Inspector General (AIG), and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to promote Mohammed, while pledging continued collaboration with him and the Nigerian Police.
ACP Ibrahim Mohammed, affectionately known as OC-Crack, hails from Achabo town in Kogi State’s Koton-Karfe local government area. He completed his early education there before joining the Nigeria Police on February 1, 1991.
Mohammed furthered his education at the police academy in Wudil, Kano, and earned a National Certificate in Education and a Bachelor of Education in Kotangora, Niger State. His service record spans several states, including Kwara, Lagos, Niger, and a position at the FCE Abuja National Assembly, before his posting to Borno State in 2010.
As head of the Crack Squad Unit in Maiduguri since January 1, 2011, his exceptional performance in service has earned him legislative recognition by the Borno State House of Assembly and a National Honor as Member of the Order of Niger (MON) in 2023.
With his new rank, ACP Mohammed vowed to maintain, if not increase, his dedication to eradicating terrorism and criminality. He expressed gratitude to God, as well as his superiors, for recognizing his contributions and facilitating his promotion.

The Borno State Police Command has made significant strides in combatting criminal activities, apprehending a female serial phone snatcher among 84 other suspects involved in various offenses. Fatima Abacha, known as Bintu, was nabbed alongside an array of alleged criminals in the state.
The crimes range from criminal conspiracy, rape, and homicide to armed robbery, theft, forgery, possession of dangerous weapons, and possession of illegal substances like Indian hemp. These activities reportedly occurred between October 1st and December 31st, 2023.
Speaking at the parade of suspects in Maiduguri on Thursday, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Daso Nahum disclosed that out of 49 cases recorded, 27 suspects have been convicted, 14 cases are under investigation, and 31 others have been charged in court.
Bintu, residing in Shehuri South, Maiduguri, was apprehended on December 28th, 2023, following her involvement in multiple mobile phone thefts. During the investigation, she exposed her accomplice, Mohammed Isa, from Babban Layi, also in Maiduguri.
Nahum highlighted the syndicate’s modus operandi, revealing their tactic of infiltrating homes as domestic help and stealing mobile phones from unsuspecting owners. Recovering a Techno LC6 phone as evidence, the police are pursuing other potential receivers linked to the crimes.
Furthermore, on December 31st, 2023, four suspects were arrested for alleged criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, possession of weapons, and Indian hemp. Items seized included suspected Indian hemp, a sword, intoxicant inhalation paraphernalia, a stick, and five mobile phones.
Among these arrests, the police revealed that one suspect confessed to acquiring a locally made pistol from a village in Yobe State, with efforts underway to apprehend the source.
Moreover, during the Christmas and New Year festive season, the command apprehended 8 suspected members of a Malian gang in various raids across Mairi, Fori, Tashan Bama, and Gwange, targeting suspected criminal hideouts.
