Tinubu to reposition Police through education — Minister

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force through enhanced education and training, as part of efforts to improve national security.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and senior police officers.

Alausa said the initiative aligns with the broader agenda of President Bola Tinubu to reposition the police for better service delivery.

He explained that discussions at the meeting centred on establishing a southern campus of the Police Academy in Erije, Abeokuta, Ogun State, aimed at expanding training opportunities and improving professionalism within the Force.

According to the minister, the proposed campus is expected to admit its first set of students between September and November 2026, pending resource verification by the National Universities Commission.

He added that the commission had been directed to fast-track the verification process to ensure timely commencement of academic activities.

Alausa further revealed plans to convert more than 42 police colleges nationwide into monotechnics to enhance technical and professional training, noting that a presidential waiver had been secured to ease the transition.

The minister said some of the proposed monotechnics would be accredited to offer industry-relevant courses designed to boost operational efficiency.

To drive implementation, he said three committees had been constituted, covering resource verification, capacity improvement in police colleges, and infrastructure development for the new academy campus.

Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmed, also commended the initiative and pledged the ministry’s support for its successful execution.

Earlier, Disu emphasised the importance of education in addressing challenges across sectors, noting that the police would continue to prioritise personnel development through improved training programmes.

The initiative forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing security nationwide.
