TISSF: ₦11.8bn FG Loan Hits 6,842 University, Polytechnic Staff as Govt Expands Welfare Scheme

The Federal Government has disbursed ₦11.8 billion loan to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across tertiary institutions in Nigeria under its newly introduced staff welfare initiative.
The intervention, implemented through the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), covers 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, according to data from the Federal Ministry of Education.
The scheme, launched in August 2025 by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is aimed at improving staff welfare, career development and financial stability across the country’s higher institutions.
Officials said about 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have so far been verified, with federal university staff making up the largest share at 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics (23 per cent) and colleges of education (18 per cent).
The programme provides interest-free loans of up to ₦10 million per eligible staff member, with a requirement that beneficiaries must have at least five years remaining before retirement.
The Ministry described the initiative as part of wider reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal drive, noting that additional support programmes are also being rolled out across institutions.
Among them is the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system introduced earlier in 2026, which has recorded 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers actively enrolled in training modules.
In another development, 240 e-tricycles have reportedly been distributed to 12 institutions to improve staff mobility and logistics support.
The Ministry also highlighted the School Safety Portal, developed in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as part of efforts to strengthen security management in schools nationwide.
Officials say the combined interventions are designed to modernise Nigeria’s education sector, improve staff productivity, and enhance institutional efficiency across tertiary institutions.
