Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, on Tuesday brokered a renewed peace accord between the Bachama and Chobo communities, formally bringing an end to the protracted communal hostilities in Lamurde Local Government Area of the state.
The peace agreement was signed at a high-level meeting held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola, and was attended by community leaders, security agencies and other key stakeholders drawn from the affected areas.
Declaring an end to the conflict, Governor Fintiri said there was “no victor and no vanquish,” noting that the accord marked a fresh beginning founded on mutual trust, tolerance and peaceful coexistence. He described the crisis as unnecessary and deeply painful, particularly for communities that had coexisted peacefully for decades before the outbreak of violence.
The governor said the lingering crisis had remained a major concern to him as the Chief Security Officer of the state, but expressed relief that peace had finally been restored. As part of immediate confidence-building measures, he announced the relaxation of the curfew imposed on the area, allowing free movement from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Governor Fintiri further assured victims of the crisis that the state government would support reconstruction, rehabilitation and other recovery efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and strengthening community ties.
Earlier, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Adamawa State Peace Commission, Dr. Jimila Suleiman, said the peace accord was the outcome of sustained dialogue and engagements facilitated by the commission under the governor’s leadership. She commended both communities for their willingness to embrace peace and commit to the resolutions reached.
Speaking on behalf of their respective communities, representatives of the Bachama and Chobo people—Danbaba Rugange and Zakaria Ibrahim—pledged to uphold the agreement and work collectively to ensure lasting peace. They assured the government that the violent incidents of July 27, 2025, would not be allowed to reoccur.
The meeting concluded with the formal presentation of the signed peace documents to representatives of both communities, marking what stakeholders described as a significant step toward lasting peace and stability in Lamurde Local Government Area.
