Adamawa Begins Payment of Pensioners’ Gratuities

The Adamawa State Government has commenced the payment of outstanding gratuities to state pensioners, fulfilling a long-standing commitment made by Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to clear pension backlogs in the state.

This followed the approval of ₦5 billion for state pensioners and ₦3 billion for local government pensioners as part of the administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of senior citizens.

The payment exercise began on Tuesday after the completion of a mandatory screening and verification process designed to ensure transparency, accountability and fairness. Verified pensioners whose names were cleared during the exercise were paid immediately upon confirmation.

Officials overseeing the process explained that the names of screened and verified beneficiaries were openly displayed, allowing pensioners to confirm their status before proceeding to collect their cheques.

The government also disclosed that local government pensioners would benefit from the initiative shortly, as arrangements had been concluded to commence their own screening and verification exercise.

Speaking on the development, the state government said the initiative was aimed at recognising the years of service rendered by pensioners and easing the financial challenges faced by retirees.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to pension reforms and timely settlement of retirement benefits, describing the gratuity payment as part of broader efforts to strengthen social protection and restore confidence in public service.
