Binani explains defection to NDC, cites supporters’ influence

A former governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Aishatu Dahiru Binani, has explained that her defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was driven by the collective will of her supporters and alignment with the party’s governance philosophy.
Binani, who represented Adamawa Central Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, said her decision followed a careful review of the NDC’s constitution, which she described as reflecting strong commitment to policy-driven governance and internal democracy.
She spoke during her formal reception into the party by its National Leader, Seriake Dickson.
“The constitution of the NDC reflects a strong commitment to governance anchored on clear policies and internal democracy,” she said.
The former senator dismissed criticisms over her recent political movements, noting that politics is dynamic and often shaped by prevailing realities.
“Some may point out that just eight or nine months ago, I was in another party. Let me say clearly: I will never condemn where I came from.
“Politics is dynamic and often local in nature, and decisions are made based on prevailing realities,” she added.
Binani said she holds no resentment toward the ADC, stressing that her decisions have always been guided by the interests of her supporters.
According to her, many of her supporters had already joined the NDC before her formal defection, contributing to the party’s growing presence in Adamawa.
“Politics is not a one-man journey. It is the people who drive the process and sustain it. Everything I have achieved is because of their support,” she said.
She expressed appreciation to the party’s leadership for the warm reception and pledged to contribute to the growth of the party at both state and national levels, emphasising fairness, equity, justice, transparency and internal democracy.
In his remarks, Dickson called on women and youths to join the NDC, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s democratic development. He criticised other parties for sidelining women after elections and urged inclusive participation.
Also speaking, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, described the NDC as a party rooted in ideology, unity and inclusiveness, highlighting its commitment to youth participation and affirmative action.
Cleopas formally presented Binani with her membership card and assured her of support within the party.
Other party leaders, including the North-East Vice Chairman, Danlami Arabs, and National Women Leader, Dudu Manuga, described Binani’s entry as a boost to women’s political participation and leadership in northern Nigeria.
