Hundreds of United Methodist Church (UMC) members in Gombe State protested against a factional group’s recognition of LGBTQ rights and regionalisation. The protesters, carrying placards, emphasized their commitment to a unified church and opposition to “unholy acts.”
The protest occurred during the Northern and Central Nigeria Annual Conferences in Gondum village, Shongom local government area. According to Resident Bishop Yohana Wesley, the factional group’s refusal to adhere to established procedures led to their disownment.
The disagreement over regionalisation and LGBTQ issues caused the contention. The traditional group deems LGBTQ acts as unholy. Despite attempts at reconciliation by Bishop John Schol from the US, the protesters resisted, remaining steadfast in their opposition to LGBTQ recognition.
