The Adamawa State Government has commenced the distribution of N250,000 each to 1,896 households severely affected by the 2024 floods across five local government areas of the state.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who flagged off the distribution on Saturday in Imburu, Numan Local Government Area, said the initiative was a response to the devastating impact of the floods on communities.
Fintiri stated that the government recognized the support, prayers, and votes of the people, which necessitated the intervention to help them rebuild their lives.
He explained that direct cash assistance was chosen over engaging contractors to ensure that the affected households could personally oversee the reconstruction of their homes.
“We want the beneficiaries to take charge of rebuilding their homes rather than relying on contractors. This will ensure that the funds are used effectively for the intended purpose,” Fintiri said.
The governor urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds properly and continue supporting government initiatives aimed at developing the state.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Humanitarian Services, Bello Hammandiram, said the intervention was part of the government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of flood victims.
Hammandiram described the 2024 floods as one of the most severe natural disasters in the state’s history, surpassing the predictions of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). He noted that the flooding affected livelihoods in unexpected areas, worsening the hardship faced by many residents.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Yakubu Hassan from Madagali expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the assistance as a significant relief for affected families.
The five local government areas severely impacted by the 2024 floods include Demsa, Lamurde, Madagali, Michika, and Numan.
