Outrage in Toungo as Man Dies in Custody of ANI Rangers

A 30-year-old resident of Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Sale Abubakar, has reportedly died in custody after being arrested by rangers of the Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation, sparking public outrage and calls for an investigation.

According to local sources, Abubakar, a father of four and husband to two wives, was allegedly apprehended by ANI rangers on Thursday for reasons yet to be officially disclosed. Witnesses claim he was beaten, placed in a chokehold, handcuffed, and detained at the ANI field office in Toungo under harsh conditions.

He reportedly died while in custody after being denied medical attention. His body was later taken to the Toungo Divisional Police Station and subsequently transferred to the Toungo Cottage Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

Community members have condemned the incident, describing it as part of a pattern of violence and alleged human rights violations by conservation personnel in the area.

“This is not the first time a member of our community has died under questionable circumstances involving ANI rangers,” a local leader told NAN on condition of anonymity. “We demand a full investigation and justice for the deceased.”

Efforts to reach officials of the Africa Nature Investors Foundation for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. Police authorities in the area have also yet to issue an official statement, although security sources confirmed that an internal inquiry may be initiated.

The incident has triggered concern among human rights advocates and environmental stakeholders over the operations of private conservation groups in protected areas and their interactions with indigenous populations.

Residents have called on the Adamawa State Government and relevant federal agencies to intervene, ensure accountability, and prevent further escalation of tension in the affected communities.
