The 8th edition of the National Youth Games commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Late Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. Team Adamawa made a striking impression during the ceremonial march past, earning widespread applause and admiration for their stunning yellow and blue tracksuits.
Senator John Owan Enoh, Honourable Minister of Sports Development, delivered a heartfelt address, welcoming participants and emphasizing the significance of the games in fostering sports development and promoting peace and unity among young athletes.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, extended a warm welcome and noted the introduction of age verification measures, calling for a revision of the age limit to under seventeen.
He stressed that the games are vital for developing socioeconomic skills and fostering national unity, and highlighted the need to revitalize sports at the primary and secondary school levels.
This year’s National Youth Games feature over 6,000 athletes, including approximately 1,000 with special needs, competing in 36 different sports. The games will continue until September 19, 2024, promising a week of thrilling competition and celebration.
