Yola TH Performs Sixth Successful Conjoined Twins Separation Surgery

The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital has recorded another medical milestone with the successful separation of conjoined twins, marking the sixth such procedure carried out at the Federal Government-owned facility.

The twins, Hassan and Hussain, born to the family of Shuaibu Jibrin from Yelwa village in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, were successfully separated on March 9, 2026.

Hospital authorities disclosed that although the twins’ mother died a day after the operation, the babies are now in stable condition and have been declared fit for discharge after spending several months under medical care.

The management of the hospital covered the full cost of the surgery, which reportedly ran into millions of naira. Additional support was provided by the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria, MAUTH chapter, which supplied food items and offered welfare support to the family.

Speaking during a press conference organised to mark the discharge of the twins, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Adamu Girei, stated that the facility possesses the expertise and capacity to handle complex medical cases.

He attributed the hospital’s achievements to government support and a conducive working environment, noting that the successes align with the healthcare goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Professor Girei also expressed appreciation to the twins’ parents for trusting the hospital with the delicate procedure.

Chairman of the occasion and former Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ali Danburam, commended the dedication, teamwork and leadership that contributed to the successful operation.

Lead surgeon, Professor Auwal Abubakar, noted that strengthening healthcare infrastructure and equipping hospitals across the country could significantly reduce the need for Nigerians to seek medical treatment abroad.

He emphasised that Nigeria has capable medical professionals who can manage highly complex surgical cases when provided with adequate facilities.

The twins’ father, Shuaibu Jibrin, alongside their grandfather, Jibrin Adamu, expressed deep gratitude to the hospital management for funding the surgery and supporting the family throughout the treatment period.
