FG Invites SSANU for Last-Minute Talks Ahead of April 30 Strike Deadline

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has confirmed a fresh meeting with the Federal Government scheduled for April 29, 2026, as the union’s strike ultimatum draws closer to its April 30 deadline.

In an update issued to members by the SSANU Secretary at Bayero University Kano (BUK), Nura Garba, the union disclosed that the Federal Government extended the invitation following SSANU’s rejection of a proposed 30 per cent salary allowance offer.

The union had earlier issued an ultimatum to the government, warning that an indefinite strike would commence if negotiations were not concluded by April 30. The rejection of the 30 per cent allowance proposal signaled dissatisfaction among members, who have continued to demand improved welfare packages and better working conditions.

According to the statement, the upcoming meeting is expected to provide another opportunity for both parties to reach an agreement and avert industrial action across Nigerian universities.

“Members are kindly urged to keep our leaders in their thoughts and prayers as they engage in this crucial renegotiation process. We remain hopeful for a positive outcome that will address our demands,” the statement read.

The development comes amid ongoing concerns within the nation’s university system over staff welfare and operational stability. Observers say the outcome of the April 29 meeting will be critical in determining whether universities nationwide will face another round of disruptions due to industrial action.

Education stakeholders and students are closely monitoring the negotiations, as any strike by SSANU could affect administrative services and daily operations in public universities across the country.
