The Senate has urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State to address the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in the North-East.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Sen. Aminu Abbas (PDP–Adamawa), co-sponsored by all North-East senators, and adopted during Wednesday’s plenary.
The motion, titled “Resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas, Adamawa and other North-East states”, highlighted the increasing attacks and displacement in the region.
Sen. Abbas noted that repeated insurgent attacks in Hong had rendered thousands homeless and destroyed properties, crippling farming and commercial activities.
The Senate commended the efforts of security agencies and called for reinforcement through a permanent military presence in the area.
It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to affected communities.
Contributing, Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Mohammed Monguno, lauded the military’s commitment and the support of President Bola Tinubu in combating terrorism.
He noted that although insurgents were previously dislodged, recent attacks on military formations and theft of equipment raised fresh concerns.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, stressed the need for vigilance and stronger border control.
“Our borders remain porous, allowing foreign insurgents to infiltrate and carry out attacks. There is a need for sustained military presence and intelligence gathering,” Akpabio said.
