The National Universities Commission and the Esports Federation of Nigeria have begun discussions on integrating esports into Nigerian universities as part of efforts to promote digital innovation and emerging technology education.
The talks took place during a meeting at the commission’s headquarters on Thursday, where both parties examined implementation strategies and expected outcomes of a proposed academic esports framework within the Nigerian University System.
President of the federation, Yahaya Maikori, was represented by the federation’s Vice President, Clinton Agbor, alongside board members Ikechukwu Okoye and Ifeanyi Elumeziem.
According to the parties, the proposed framework is expected to position Nigerian universities as centres for innovation in digital technology and creative industries.
Areas identified for development include esports research, gaming psychology, digital behaviour studies, artificial intelligence in gaming, virtual and augmented reality innovation, immersive technology and African game development.
The stakeholders also discussed plans to establish structured policies covering academic balance, mental health monitoring, anti-addiction measures, ethical competition standards, professional coaching and player welfare systems.
Both organisations expressed confidence that the collaboration would encourage creativity, research and technological advancement across tertiary institutions in the country.
The initiative is also expected to expand opportunities for students interested in digital careers and emerging technology sectors while strengthening Nigeria’s presence in the global esports industry.
